A Big Red Flag
Marriage Equality presented before the Supreme Court was the top story of the week. I saw my first red box on facebook about 10 that morning. By the time I got home from work there were red boxes all over my page. I changed mine too. By the next day a lot of my friends list was sporting red boxes. It was amazing, and inspiring.
It may not make the Supreme Court take notice (I have this weird idea Justice Ginsberg and the rest don’t spend loads of time on facebook), and it may not change the outcome of the Court’s decision. BUT – it changed me. I’ve always been for marriage equality, of course, but I live in a conservative state and I don’t see much evidence or support in my daily life. Seeing friends – gay, straight, bi, – putting up symbols of marriage support really made my heart feel good — AND gave me the hope that no matter what SCOTUS decides – some day – that day – will come.
I have had to laugh at Justice Scalia’s attempts to skirt reasonable arguments that say religion and tradition are no reason to deny rights to anyone by suggesting they don’t want to move TOO FAST on this issue. Are you kidding me? Gay people have been around FOREVER and living lives of love and happiness FOREVER and other countries have had marriage equality for years. So, No – Justice Scalia – you aren’t moving too fast. From where I stand – seems like the court should try to catch up.
